Cleanings
Over due for a check up and cleaning? Give us a call!
Dental cleanings will be completed by a Registered Dental Hygienist. These cleanings will normally occur at the same time as the comprehensive exam initially and at the regular check-ups subsequently. For the majority of patients, professional dental cleanings are recommended twice per year, or every 6 months.
The cleaning will include:
● Removal of all calculus, or tartar, from the teeth – Calculus is calcified plaque that hardens when mature plaque has been present on the teeth. Once calculus is attached to a tooth, it cannot be removed by regular brushing and it must be removed in the dental office with special instruments.● Removal of all plaque from the teeth – Plaque is a colorless biofilm that accumulates on the teeth. If left on the teeth, plaque can cause tooth decay or give rise to gingivitis and eventually periodontitis. In its early stages, plaque can be removed with a toothbrush by proper brushing.● Teeth polishing – Removal of any remaining plaque or stains present on the teeth after professional removal of calculus brushing.● Fluoride application (if necessary) – Fluoride helps remineralizer small carious lesions before they extend to dentin and helps prevent formation of future caries.● Oral hygiene instructions – Instructions and demonstrations will be provided with an emphasis on brushing and flossing twice a day. In addition, any and all questions are welcome and can be answered at this time.
