Sealants

Dental sealants are a simple procedure in which a tooth-colored acrylic "coating" is painted onto the surface of the tooth. They are highly effective in preventing decay on the biting surfaces of your chewing teeth. This effectively "seals" the deep grooves, acting as a barrier and protecting enamel from plaque and acids. Sealants protect the depressions and grooves of your teeth from food particles and plaque that brushing and flossing can't reach. Easy to apply, sealants take only a few minutes to seal each tooth. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and can last several years before a reapplication is needed. Children and adults can benefit from sealants in the fight against tooth decay.

What Are They?

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars). These areas are prone to cavities because they have deep grooves where food and plaque can get trapped. Sealants fill in these grooves, creating a smooth surface that makes it harder for bacteria and food particles to build up, reducing the risk of cavities.
The application process is quick and painless. The dentist or hygienist cleans the teeth, applies a special gel to help the sealant bond, and then places the sealant material on the tooth. The sealant is hardened using a special light. Sealants can last several years and are a preventive measure, especially for children and teenagers who are more vulnerable to cavities.

Who Are They For?

Dental sealants are primarily recommended for children and teenagers, as they are more prone to cavities, especially in their back teeth, which have deep grooves. However, adults who are at high risk for cavities or have deep grooves in their teeth may also benefit from sealants.
Sealants are often applied to permanent molars and premolars, typically around the ages of 6 and 12, when these teeth first erupt. They provide added protection during the years when the risk of cavities is highest. However, anyone with healthy teeth and who is at risk for decay may be a good candidate for sealants.
